Tian’anmen is the centre of Beijing and a base to photograph, explore and be introduced to the many facets of Chinese civilisation. North of Tian'anmen Square and displaying an iconic portrait of Chairman Mao is the Ming dynasty Tian’anmen Gate and the main entrance to the Forbidden City. Chang’an Jie is Beijing’s major east-west road axis and the route for line 1 of the subway. Grand parades are held here on National Day, 1-October. South of Tian’anmen Qianmen. The Zhengyang Gate was part of the old city wall and facing it is the Arrow Tower within a small park. Together they once formed a highly imposing entrance to the imperial heart of the capital. Continuing south of the main square, Qianmen Dajie is a pedestrian avenue and unique shopping district recreating traditional architecture with high-street brands.
